What is the difference between AR500 and AR550 steel?

Steel hardness is measured using the Brinell hardness test which is conducted by indenting a steel plate with a 10mm steel or tungsten carbide ball under a set amount of pressure. A Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) is then assigned based on the diameter of the indent left in the steel.

The hardness of abrasion resistant (AR) steel is extremely important for steel targets. Softer steels can develop pits, craters, dimples, and other hazardous deformities when shot with any kind of ammo. For steel targets to be functional and safe, they should be made of high quality through hardened steel that has a BHN of at least 500.

The hardness of steel can vary depending on chemical makeup and the manner in which the heating and cooling of the steel is manipulated. Steel is an iron and carbon alloy that is made harder through the addition of elements like chromium, nickel, tungsten, and manganese. Depending on the chemical makeup, molten steel must be quenched (cooled) at a certain rate to achieve the desired hardness. Steel producers use different chemical equations and cooling processes to harden steel, but the end result is the same.

AR550 steel has a different chemical composition than AR500 steel and is significantly harder. Targets made of AR500 steel are generally designed for handgun ammunitions and certain rifle rounds within a limited range of grain and muzzle velocity. Targets made of AR550 steel are designed for all handgun ammunition and non armor-piercing rifle rounds. Shooters should follow the general shooting distance rule of 10 yards for handguns and 100 yards for rifles.

How do I order spare bolts and parts?

All nuts and bolts used in the Action Target portable product line are grade 5 hardware which is made of a more durable steel. Replacements of the same size can be found at your local hardware store but could be a lower grade. For grade 5 replacement hardware, contact customer service toll free at (877) 852-2418.

Can my steel target be damaged if I leave it outside?

No. Your steel target can be left outside permanently in the rain, snow, or other elements without being damaged. Should the paint chip or wear due to weather, simply restore it by applying spray paint of your choice. We recommend using an inexpensive, flat color spray paint.

Can I purchase individual pieces?

Yes. Certain pieces like head plates, stands, and feet are available for purchase online. If you cannot find the piece that you are looking for, call customer service toll free at (877) 852-2418.

Does Action Target make custom targets?

We don't normally make custom targets due to our high volume production, but we are always open to new target ideas. If you have a great idea for a target, email our Portable Target Specialist Chad Burdette at

Please be aware that all target ideas must meet our stringent quality and safety standards.

What part of my target is armor steel?

All of the shooting surfaces (ie. head plates) are always made of armor steel. The stands, feet, and hardware are made of mild steel.

How do I tell the difference on my target head plate between the AR500 and AR550 armor steel?

If your target head plate is made of AR550 steel, there will be three notches or indentations at the bottom of the plate. Head plates made of AR500 steel will have no notches.

Why are there three notches at the bottom of my target head plate?

These notches indicate that the head plate is made of AR550 steel which is rated for rifle shooting at appropriate distances.
